FirstBank believes in ensuring diversity is represented at each level of the organization. In May, we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander History Month (AAPI) by recognizing and celebrating some of FirstBank’s Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander employees.

Today we’re featuring Phuong Bui-Tran, Senior Personal Banker.

Hometown: Vietnam

Years at FirstBank: 3 years and 4 months

Describe your experience getting to where you are today.

When I first joined the FirstBank team I started as a teller and worked my way up to a new account representative and finally, a Senior Personal Banker. I want to thank my family, friends, coworkers, and management team for all the support. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

What is your best career advice for the next generation of leaders? What would you tell someone just starting?

The next generation of leaders should focus on key skills such as collaboration, influencing, and growth mindsets that will connect their coworkers to their organization. It’s important to work with others to achieve your goals like the African proverb says, “if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.” In order to accomplish this, we must listen to others and be open to new ideas as well as demonstrate the ability to learn, grow, and adapt.

How has FirstBank’s companywide philosophy of “banking for good” impacted your life and career?

FirstBank’s companywide philosophy of “banking for good” has always been meaningful and interesting to me. I have been able to partake in “banking for good” by giving back to the community through Colorado Gives Day, Project Angel Heart, Adopt-A-Family, and other nonprofits that I care about. By using my volunteer time off (VTO), I’ve been able to volunteer at so many different organizations that I care about and always leave feeling grateful.

Considering May is AAPI month, which historical figure/s would you like to meet and why?

I would like to meet Marie To, Director of the “Paris by Night” show. Mrs. To has featured Vietnamese culture through the use of song, comedy, and dance. Her show helps Vietnamese people living in the U.S. feel closer to home.
