It’s no secret small businesses are the heartbeat of our economy. That’s why FirstBank launched a new video series aptly named “It Takes Courage”— a phrase encompassing the audacity it takes to build a construction business from scratch or start a successful string of restaurant concepts.

In these videos, you’ll see how dedication, family support, and a little help from a trusted banking partner can make big business dreams come true.

Here are six businesses redefining what it takes to start a new venture.

1. Younes Medical Corporation

Younes Medical Center’s path to becoming California’s top infectious disease practice is a journey of extreme dedication. Dr. Bachir Younes grew up in war-torn Lebanon before immigrating to America, inspiring his passion for healing people. As an immigrant, he faced many financial obstacles causing him to almost give up on his dream.

2. Roots & Mane

Roots & Mane is a family-owned and operated salon dedicated to helping clients look and feel their best. Co-owner Marissa Harmon knows strong relationships are key to success — a lesson she learned from her father. His advice led her to a crucial banking partnership, securing a nearly $400,000 commercial real estate loan to transform a rundown gym into a bustling hub of beauty and relaxation.

3. Vulcan Fire

In the Mountain West region, there’s a fire protection company making a lasting impact — Vulcan Fire. Co-owners CJ Simonds and Todd Wagner combined their 20 years of experience to create something truly special. What started in a garage has now grown into a nearly 40-person operation with locations in Colorado and Idaho, on track to do $10 million in sales. Their impressive growth story wasn’t just about success — it’s about putting their clients first.

4. Slammin Chicken

Slammin Chicken serves up some of the most mouthwatering fried chicken dishes in Lakewood, CO. The story behind it is one of determination. Owner Shi (Ben) Ke came to the U.S. with just $200 in his pocket and a fierce hunger for the American Dream. He bet on himself, and today, he’s the proud owner of several unique restaurant concepts across the Front Range.

5. JAG Construction

JAG Construction was founded by Arizona native Noel Guevara, who envisioned building homes in the community where he grew up. After witnessing his parents work 10–12-hour days to make ends meet, Noel was inspired to provide a better life for himself and his family. He is now proud to say his mom and dad can retire after the company recently cleared $35 million.

6. LS Lighting Design

LS Group is a woman-owned small business based in Colorado specializing in lighting design. The company transformed in 2020 when two full-time working moms, Sarah Erickson and Elise Streeb, purchased and expanded its service beyond luxury residential projects. Today, LS Group has grown into a recognized leader in the lighting industry, taking on award-winning national and international projects. In 2024, LS Group accomplished something financially that less than 2% of women-owned businesses have been able to achieve.
