During some of the most life-changing events, it’s the small gestures that help lift weight of the world off your shoulders — even if it’s only temporary. See how FirstBank set out to make an impact by helping a customer in need with an “Act of Goodness.”

The incident.

Monday, February 17, was the day that changed everything for Kathy Mordeaux, longtime FirstBank customer and Castle Rock resident. While she was in the hospital, tending to health issues, a fire broke out at her home. Tragically, her husband and cat didn’t survive. Not only is the loss of a loved one hard enough to manage, but Kathy’s home was destroyed beyond repair, along with nearly 75 years’ worth of belongings and memories.

So, what do you do after losing everything that means the most to you? Fortunately, Kathy built a strong support group through her church, which helped set up a donation fund in her name and provided housing guidance.

The surprise.

“When I first heard about the tragedy on the news, I was in shock. To then find out it was one of our customers, I immediately knew we had to help,” said Becca Fontana, FirstBank Branch Manager.

After learning that Kathy’s housing situation was in resolution, Becca set out to provide additional support. With FirstBank’s help, she assembled a home essentials gift basket with two $500 gift cards to help repurchase belongings lost in the fire and much-needed cleaning supplies, washcloths, bed sheets, cutlery, and more. Kathy also received a $1,500 cash deposit to help purchase a brand-new mattress.

While you can never fully recover from a traumatic loss like this, Kathy was overwhelmed with the support she received from her friends at FirstBank. Several FirstBankers stopped by the assisted living home, where she’s staying temporarily, to show their support and heartfelt condolences.

“Kathy was so happy and at a loss for words,” said Becca.

Though her road to recovery is long, she can always count on FirstBank to go beyond banking and lend a hand. That’s “banking for good.”

“I love working for a company that prioritizes its customers and encourages employees to make a difference in their communities. FirstBank’s “banking for good” philosophy has influenced every aspect of my life, and I’m proud to help people like Kathy who need it most,” said Becca.
