In May, we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month by recognizing and celebrating some of FirstBank’s Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander employees.

Today, we’re featuring Hong Nguyen, Southwest Assistant Vice President.

Home country: Vietnam

Years at FirstBank: 3.5 years

1. In three to four sentences, describe your experience in getting to where you are today.

Growing up in Vietnam, I learned the value of hard work and resilience from an early age, which fueled my determination to build a meaningful career. Moving to the U.S. and joining FirstBank three years ago was a big step for me, and it’s been a journey of adapting to new challenges while leaning on my strengths in problem-solving and relationship-building. Rising to Assistant Vice President has been a rewarding milestone, made possible by persistence, mentorship, and a willingness to embrace every opportunity to grow.

2. How has FirstBank’s companywide philosophy of “banking for good” impacted your life and your career?

FirstBank’s “banking for good” philosophy has truly shaped how I approach my work — it’s inspiring to be part of a company that prioritizes community impact alongside financial success. It’s influenced me personally by reinforcing the importance of integrity and purpose in everything I do, and professionally, it’s given me a framework to connect with customers and colleagues in a meaningful way. Knowing my efforts contribute to something bigger than profit keeps me motivated daily.

3. What is the best career advice you have for the next generation of leaders? What would you tell someone just starting out?

My best advice is to stay curious and never stop learning — every experience, even the tough ones, builds who you’ll become as a leader. For someone just starting out, I’d say don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek out mentors, and take initiative even when it feels uncomfortable — those small steps add up. Patience and consistency will carry you farther than you think.

4. What is one thing you’re most proud of that you’ve accomplished while working at FirstBank?

I’m most proud of the number of first-time homebuyers and families I’ve been able to assist.  In particular, I co-lead a FirstBank program with Habitat for Humanity. Our work enables Habitat for Humanity affiliates the ability to build more homes for low-income families, as well as assists Habitat for Humanity in providing interest-free mortgages and down payment assistance. Being a part of this meaningful program that helps people achieve homeownership is incredibly fulfilling and aligns perfectly with FirstBank’s “banking for good” mission. It’s a reminder of the ripple effect of our work and how we can make a real difference.

5. If you had your own talk show, who would be your first guest?

I’d pick Michelle Obama — she’s an inspiring figure who’s navigated leadership, family, and social impact with grace and strength. I’d love to hear her insights on resilience and how she’s stayed true to her values under pressure. Plus, she’d bring such warmth and wisdom to the conversation.

6. Considering May is AAPI Heritage Month, which historical figure/s would you most like to meet and why?

I’d love to meet Nguyễn Trãi, the 15th-century Vietnamese scholar and strategist who helped liberate Vietnam from foreign rule with his brilliant mind and poetic voice. As someone from Vietnam, his blend of intellect, courage, and dedication to justice resonates with me deeply. I’d ask him how he stayed hopeful and focused during such turbulent times. His legacy reminds me of the power of perseverance and cultural pride.
