In February, we observe Black History Month by recognizing and celebrating some of FirstBank’s Black and African American employees.

Today, we’re featuring Shenea Simon, North Market Branch Manager.

Hometown: Thornton and Westminster, CO

Years at FirstBank: 7 years

1. In 3 to 4 sentences, describe your experience in getting to where you are today.

Since I got my first job, becoming a manager was my goal. I’ve always been driven to leadership roles and have enjoyed being in management, leading a team to success. The joy of mentoring, coaching, providing recognition, and displaying what leadership should be like to your team makes my heart smile. Building trust is very important to me. I tend to observe quite often, and that helps me navigate the roads ahead to help others get across the finish line. I’ve worked in the North market for my entire FirstBank career. I started as a teller to get my foot in the door and put in time, work, and dedication. These values brought me to my role as a branch manager.

2. How has FirstBank’s companywide philosophy of “banking for good” impacted your life and your career?

FirstBank always strives to be an example to those looking in, which sets us apart from other financial institutions. We want to help. We want to give, and we want people to be taken care of. It’s a blessing to be part of a good, kind, and generous team. I love watching us forge ahead. I’ve been given the opportunity to spread my wings and grow long-lasting relationships within FirstBank.

3. What is the best career advice you have for the next generation of leaders? What would you tell someone just starting out?

  1. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, and make sure you speak up when given the opportunity. Everyone has a voice, so be open and willing to listen.
  2. Always give respect and accept recognition.
  3. Remain teachable through all challenges; don’t run away or give up.
  4. When faced with adversity, it’s during that time that you’re building endurance to persevere.
  5. Know what you’re good at and keep strong at it. Work on any areas of opportunity, but know that each individual makes a team, and you need everyone and every talent to create a great team.

4. What is one thing you’re most proud of that you’ve accomplished while working at FirstBank?

Since working at FirstBank, I’ve become a woman my children and many others look up to. As a follower of Christ and working in a professional environment, I’ve learned how to carry myself in a respectable manner. I’ve set many goals, but I’ve learned that you gain more when you take your eyes off yourself. I lead by example everywhere I go because someone is always watching and noticing what I do.

5. If you had your own talk show, who would be your first guest?

Joyce Meyer would be my first guest. Her books, sermons, and podcasts have given me and many other women tools to keep a good head on our shoulders and make better choices.

6. Considering February is Black History Month, which historical figure/s would you most like to meet and why?

If I could go back in time, I would like to meet Harriet Tubman. I would love the opportunity to know the depth of her mind from beginning to end, and I would like to go on the journey with her story of resilience and survival inspires me.
