When Everett Watson Jr., a Chandler, Arizona teen, experienced life-altering events, his story of perseverance and tenacity touched the hearts of many, including several FirstBank employees. See how FirstBank coordinated a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Everett Jr. and his family.

A community rallies around a determined athlete.

Everett Jr. lost his left foot in a February 2021 shooting when he and three brothers were playing basketball at a local park. Despite this life-changing injury, he didn’t let it stop him from pursuing his athletic dreams. Today, he plays defensive line for the Perry High School JV football team in Chandler, Arizona, and plans to try out for wrestling and track teams next school year.

When his prosthetic foot broke during a game last fall, Everett Jr. started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10,000 for repairs. After AZ Family, a local television station, covered his story, the community quickly rallied to meet his fundraising goal. The local news coverage brought attention to his determination and sparked an outpouring of support from Valley residents.

From banking to making dreams come true.

Ross Jackson, Treasury Management Senior Specialist at FirstBank, learned about Everett’s story and was inspired to help through the bank’s “Acts of Goodness” program, which encourages employees to nominate customers experiencing hardships to receive gifts or tokens of appreciation.

“When I first heard Everett Jr.’s story and learned that he was raising funds to fix his broken prosthetic, I knew FirstBank had to step in and provide support,” said Ross.

With the help of FirstBank, Ross booked a private stadium tour at State Farm Stadium, where the Arizona Cardinals play. As an avid Cardinals fan, Everett Jr. was gifted signed memorabilia, a Kyler Murray jersey, and new athletic gear to support his passion for sports. During the two-hour stadium visit, Watson Jr. explored the locker rooms and press areas and walked on the same field where his football heroes play. The Arizona Cardinals organization added to the experience by presenting him with a football signed by quarterback Kyler Murray and team merchandise.

“Seeing his excitement throughout the tour reminded us why community support matters. I’m proud to work for a company like FirstBank, where I’m encouraged to go beyond banking and truly make a difference in the lives of community members who need it most,” said Ross.

AZ Family also attended the tour and produced a TV segment to bring Everett Jr.’s story to the forefront.

“This experience has left me in shock from all the support I’ve been given,” said Everett Jr. “I’m trying not to give up, and this incredible support has become my motivation to keep going.”
