At FirstBank, we’re always looking out for ways to help you save money without sacrificing the little things in life. That’s why we’ve put together a list of our five favorite ways to save when spending quality time with the family this summer.

Whether you’re road-tripping across the U.S. or settling in for a staycation, these savvy spending and saving tips will help you enjoy all that summer has to offer:

1)      Register for discount sites. Most of us know about Groupon and LivingSocial, but there are other discount sites, too. Check out TravelZoo and DealChicken for bargain prices on tickets to sporting events and concerts in addition to discounts on summer adventures like horseback riding, kayak rentals, whitewater rafting and so much more.

2)      Be a tourist in your own city. Pack up a picnic and enjoy your local park, take a bike ride on a nearby trail or visit local landmarks and museums. You might just be surprised at the adventures your own backyard has in store.

3)      Check events calendars. Many local TV stations and newspapers host community calendars on their websites. A majority of listings are often for free events, including activities like outdoor movie nights, concerts in the park, and even free days at the local zoo or museums.

Red Rocks

The Denver Film Society puts on the Film on the Rocks events throughout the summer months in Colorado. Additional information and tickets found at: http://film.redrocksonline.com/fotr

4)      Stay outdoors. If the lights, TV and the oven are turned off, you’re saving money on energy costs. Plus, you get to spend more time cooking out and enjoying the summer sunshine. Start a game of hide and seek in the yard, draw with sidewalk chalk, ride your bikes or take a walk around the neighborhood or simply relax in your backyard hammock.

5)      Make it a picnic. Splurge on tickets to the local amusement park? Instead of paying the high prices for food inside, pack a cooler with sandwiches, snacks and water to enjoy a lunch break by the car or in a designated picnic area.
