In three to four sentences, describe your experience in getting to where you are today.

I am originally from México. I moved to the U.S. at 15 and began working in the food and construction industries. My career took a significant turn in 2015 when I joined FirstBank as a teller. Through dedication and hard work, I advanced to a management role, which I held for five years before transitioning to the Marketing department in 2023. Guided by my parents’ old-school work ethic of integrity and discipline, I embrace challenges and see them as opportunities for growth to better myself and contribute to the company.

How has FirstBank’s companywide philosophy of “banking for good” impacted your life and your career?

FirstBank’s ‘banking for good’ philosophy has profoundly impacted my life. The tools and opportunities provided by the bank have not only fostered my professional growth but also enriched my personal life. I’ve gained valuable financial education and insights into the economy, which have empowered me to build a better future for myself and my family. This holistic approach to banking has truly made a difference in my journey.

What is the best career advice you have for the next generation of leaders? What would you tell someone just starting out?

My best career advice for the next generation of leaders is to pursue what you love and enjoy the learning process, even if that means you make mistakes. It can be a valuable lesson as long as you don’t repeat it, so don’t be afraid to try new things. Identify your strengths and align your work with them. While it’s always good to listen and take advice from others, remember that you ultimately make the final decision in your career. Building a strong and extensive network is also crucial, as relationships and connections can open doors and create new opportunities. Lastly, as soon as you can do so, diversify your sources of income.

Who do you look up to personally and professionally?

I deeply admire my parents for leaving everything behind in México and moving to the U.S. to give my sister and me a better future. Their courage shaped who I am today and allowed me to meet incredible people, including my wife. Becoming a father has made me appreciate my parents sacrifices even more. Professionally, I’ve had the privilege of working with so many great people. It’s hard to pick just one, I’ve learned something valuable from everyone.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I love outdoor activities, and this summer, playing soccer, going on bike rides with my son, and spending time at home with my wife has been especially enjoyable. I also love traveling and taking trips with my family, which adds to the joy of exploring new places. During the pandemic, I took up photography as a hobby, which has since become a full-fledged side gig. I enjoy photography because it allows me to be creative and capture priceless moments for others. The more I learn about it, the more passionate I become.

Considering September and October is Hispanic Heritage Month, which historical figure/s would you most like to meet and why?

I would love to meet Guillermo del Toro, whose remarkable work as a filmmaker deeply inspires me. Spending time with him would be a fantastic opportunity to learn about his success, strategies, and personal experiences. I’m particularly interested in hearing about his struggles and how he overcame them. His creative journey and achievements make him someone I’d be eager to connect with.
