Lunar New Year takes place Feb. 1 – 15. It marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar traditional to many East-Asian countries and is celebrated by over 1.5 billion people.  

Each year is marked by one of twelve Zodiac animals, each with its own meaning and attributes. 2022 is the Year of the Tiger. 

Why is Lunar New Year in February? 

The United States bases the new year on the Gregorian calendar, which always marks each new year on January 1st. In contrast, Lunar New Year is based on the new moon in the lunar cycle, resulting in a different date each year. 

What does the Year of the Tiger mean for me? 

People born in the Year of the Tiger are said to be brave, confident, and natural leaders. However, Tigers may be viewed as domineering and careless because of their extroverted tendencies.

Why 12 animals? 

Folklore says that the order of the zodiac signs is the result of a race involving the 12 animals. The prize was a coveted position on the Chinese Zodiac calendar, and the order of the zodiac corresponds to the finishing place of each animal in that race.
